What you ask of it

He knows the virtues of herbs and precious stones, and creates images of all kinds of birds that fly and sing around the magician as familiars.

Provenance

Decarabia, also Carabia, is in Weyer's Pseudomonarchia Daemonum and passed into the Ars Goetia with changes of classification: Weyer gives him as king and count, while the Goetia fixes him as marquis. The Goetic description preserves his stellar appearance and his knowledge of herbs, stones, and birds. Already attested in the Liber Officiorum Spirituum (Folger V.b.26, 16th c.) as «Cambira».

The seal: printed edition and facsimile

Decarabia's main seal follows the printed Mathers–Crowley (1904) form; the Sloane MS 2731 manuscript facsimile is shown separately for comparison.

How it is summoned

In antiquity

According to the Ars Goetia, the operation is the same for all 72 spirits:

  1. The magician draws the magic Circle and never steps out of it during the whole work.
  2. A few paces away he draws the Triangle of Art: there, and only there, must the spirit manifest.
  3. On his breast he wears the lamen bearing the demon's seal, engraved in metal.
  4. He recites the conjurations, calling it by its names and by the divine names.
  5. If the spirit resists or delays, the constraint and the 'chain of spirits' are used.
  6. Once the request is granted, he gives it the license to depart, and never before.

The birds he produces fly, sing, and drink like natural ones, without any orientation, hour, offering, or precaution of his own being assigned to him.

Source: Ars Goetia (17th c.); already in Weyer's Pseudomonarchia Daemonum, 1577, as Decarabia or Carabia

The common Goetic operation also adds, when needed: to constrain a resisting spirit (Wellcome MS 110, c74–c78), to show it the Pentacle of Solomon once manifested (Ars Theurgia-Goetia), to work in its planetary hour and day (by rank), and finally to give it licence to depart —and never before (Wellcome MS 110, c53). Practise the full rite at The Practitioner's Table.

What is the “chain of spirits”?
It is the Ars Goetia's general curse (Catena Spirituum) against a spirit that rebels or will not appear: not a list of spirits, but a coercive formula added at the end of the conjurations. It curses the spirit and strips it of “its office, joy and place”, binds it “in the bottomless pit”, and calls all heaven —the Sun, Moon and stars— to curse it “into the fire unquenchable”. Its physical act: putting the spirit's name and seal in the brass box, “chained and bound up”, to be choked in sulphurous smoke and burned in material fire until it obeys. Read it in full in our Goetia (Sloane 2731).

Modern · not ancient

  1. Print or draw its seal and place it before you on a clean surface.
  2. Light a candle and, if you wish, some incense; still your mind and set your intention.
  3. Intone its enn softly and repeatedly, eyes on the seal, until you feel a shift in the air.
  4. State your request clearly and respectfully, not as a command.
  5. Give thanks, let the candle burn down a little and close; modern practice is devotional, with no coercive conjuration.

Enn (modern chant): «Hoesta noc ra Decarabia secore»

Source: Enn of modern demonolatry, circulated in lists derived from S. Connolly and Valerie Corban; modern correspondence not attested in Weyer

Modern lists sometimes associate him with air; the ancient source documents only his stellar form, natural knowledge, and birds.

Modern experiences (personal gnosis)

In modern practice, referenced in works like 'The Daemonolatry Goetia' (S. Connolly, 2010), contemporary practitioners often seek Decarabia to dispel illusions, unveil deceptions, and remove persistent obstacles. His presence is frequently described with a subtle and intellectual tone, perceived as an analytical influence that grants mental clarity and facilitates practical connection with the properties of crystals or herbs.

Personal gnosis (UPG): how contemporary practitioners say they experience it. This is subjective experience, not a historical source or doctrine; it does not come from the ancient grimoires and may not be real.
