From the Greek «goeteia», which originally meant simply sorcery or witchcraft: dealing with spirits of the underworld, often for concrete ends. In late antiquity Iamblichus opposed it to «theurgy» (divine magic). Today it is usually identified with the Ars Goetia, but the term is far older and broader.
