Vizir.

The old man looked at him affectionately; he held out his hand to him, and pronounced softly and expressively: 6 Solem; and the Muphti, after bowing, disappeared.

Give me back the talisman and the ring, the old man said to me, and take these, plate No. 5; they will serve you to set in activity as many genies as you wish, in order to perform on the spot all the works you may desire to undertake and to stop the works that might be contrary to you; the magic words are Zoranni, Zaitux, Elastot. We shall not make any experiment at this moment; tomorrow we shall go to the banks of the Nile and there have built a bridge of a single arch over which we shall pass to the other side of the river. Here is the talisman, plate No. 6, and its ring; they have the property of destroying everything, of commanding the elements, of making the lightning, the hail, the stars fall; [of commanding] earthquakes, hurricanes, whirlwinds of land and sea, and of preserving

the rings in the casket. The genius who was at my side closed it, handed him back the key, and the old man said to me: all these prodigies that have been wrought before you, my dear son, must leave you in no doubt as to the power and the virtue of these talismans and of the rings; if you have met with no obstacle in your undertakings, it is because your heart is pure, your soul is without stain, and virtue, probity and honour were always dear to you.

A man who had the slightest reproach to make against himself, who had stolen the property of others, or who had merely entertained the intention of doing so, could not take part in our mysteries; in vain would he possess all that you see, in vain would our magical language be known to him: the celestial, aerial, infernal and terrestrial powers, and those of the seas and of fire, would be rebels to him.

Everything he might undertake would turn to his shame and confusion, and at each invocation he made, the power whose aid and intervention he called upon would answer him: Renounce your projects, you are guilty; before commanding us, purify yourself, repent, expiate your faults.

If after these emanations he continued to conjure the powers, he would end up being punished for it and would infallibly lose his life.

Remember then, my dear son, that all things are possible to virtue, and that no fault remains unpunished; there are still two prayers which you shall take care to recite before and after each conjuration that you wish to perform; here they are:

FIRST PRAYER.

«Above the celestial fire there is an incorruptible flame, ever sparkling, source of life, fountain of all beings and principle of all things. This flame produces everything and nothing perishes save what it consumes: it makes itself known by itself; this fire cannot be contained in any place; it is without body and without matter, it surrounds the heavens, and there comes forth from it a little spark that makes all the fire of the sun, of the moon and of the stars. This is what I know of God: do not seek to know more of it; for that surpasses [all] reach, whatever judge you may be; moreover, know that the unjust and wicked man cannot hide [...]»

SECOND PRAYER.

« There is in God an immense depth of flames; the heart must not fear to touch this adorable fire, or to be touched by it; it shall not be consumed by this fire so gentle, whose tranquil and perishable warmth makes the bond, the harmony, and the duration of the world. Nothing subsists save by this fire, which is God himself. No one has begotten him; he is without mother, he knows all, and nothing can be taught to him: he is unshakable in his designs and his name is ineffable. This is what God is: for as for us, who are his messengers, we are but a small part of God. »

You see, my son, that all the instructions I give you are founded upon the respect that is owed to God, who is the principle of all things and whose ineffable and boundless goodness fills us

I will teach you to read as I do in this book, he told me, but let us attend to the manner of hatching the Poule Noire and of procuring the eggs from which she must come forth.

He took several pieces of aromatic wood, such as of Valois, cedar, the orange tree, the lemon tree, laurel, iris root, roses whose leaves had dried in the sun; he put it all into a golden brazier, spread over it balsamic oil, the purest incense, transparent gum; and having pronounced the words: Athas, Solinam, Erminatos, Paseim, the sun penetrated into the subterranean chamber; he placed a glass upon the brazier, and the sun's rays having struck the glass, at the same instant these perfumes and the pieces of odoriferous wood that were in the brazier burst into flame, the glass liquefied, a sweet odour spread through the subterranean chamber; and soon nothing remained but ashes: the old man, who had not ceased to watch with the greatest attention,

The sun seemed to dart its rays upon this bell with more force and violence. The bell turned the color of fire, the golden egg vanished from my eyes, a light vapor rose into the air, and I see a little black chick that stirs, stands up on its legs and lets out a faint clucking; the old man holds out one of his fingers, it comes to perch on it, he pronounces these two words: Binusas, Testipas, and the bird slips into his bosom.

There, the old man said to me, is the manner of procuring a Black Hen; in a few days she will be of the ordinary size, and I will instruct her before you; you will see what instinct this animal has for discovering the most hidden treasures, and that the smallest particle of gold cannot escape it. Let us give thanks to the Great Being who has permitted us to penetrate these mysteries and [...]

to perform so many prodigies and marvels.

We pronounced together the two prayers reported above, and after having fulfilled this duty, he said to me: My son, enough; we are going to take a little rest. The sun still shone upon us for some time, then disappeared, and its light was replaced by that of several lamps.

The genie, who had not left us, took a lyre and, accompanying himself, sang in the language of the Magi the power of the Eternal and the marvels of nature.

The old man listened attentively to the accents of the genie; as for me, I was enchanted, and he smiled as he observed me. Enough, he said to the genie; before giving ourselves up to rest, I want to show you the means of having a Black Hen without having recourse to those I have employed, for it would be difficult to procure the perfumes and the other materials that I have put in the brazier, if any other being than you and me wanted to perform this great work. But if some day you should find someone worthy of being initiated; here is the means you could employ: you would take an egg which you would expose at noon to the light of the sun, observing

If it has not the slightest stain; next you would choose a Poule Noire [Black Hen] as far as possible; if it had feathers of another colour you would pluck them out, you would cover its head with a sort of hood of black cloth so that it could distinguish nothing; you would leave it the use of its beak, you would shut it up in a box lined likewise with black cloth, large enough to contain it, and would place this box in a chamber where daylight could not penetrate, taking even care to bring it food only at night; and when all these indispensable precautions had been taken, you would give it the egg to hatch, observing further that it could not be distracted by any noise.

Everything being painted black to this bird, its imagination would be struck by it, and the time being accomplished, you will see hatched a perfectly black hen; but, I repeat it, he who operates must be, by his wisdom and his virtue, worthy to participate in these sacred and divine mysteries. For if we cannot read in the hearts of men, it is not so with the Grand Etre [the Great Being], all is known to him and he penetrates our most secret intentions and our most

Our session has been long enough, he added, we must take some food before giving ourselves over to rest. He clapped his hands three times, and the slaves, the genies who had already appeared, offered themselves anew to my gaze, and in an instant we had all the dishes that could satisfy taste, smell and sight. The meal was very merry; the old man enlivened it with his sallies, the genie was also of the party; I was as if inspired, and I joined in the conversation; at last, sleep coming to weigh upon our eyelids, we left the table to taste its sweetness.

The most pleasant dreams lulled me with their smiling images; and when I awoke, daylight was illuminating our dwelling. I saw neither the old man nor the genie, I thought they had gone out, and I abandoned myself to my reflections; the present reassured me about the future, nothing could trouble me. If fortune gives happiness, I said to myself, who will be happier than I? I cannot form any wish that is not accomplished on the spot; may my

fate would be envied if it were known to the rest of men! I wished to be able to return to my homeland soon, and while I was about to follow up on this idea, a faint noise made itself heard and I saw the old man enter followed by the genie; they approached me, both held out their hands to me, and I at once left my resting bed.

You have rested well, my dear son, the old man said to me; during your sleep I went out with the genie to visit my birds, and I am going to make their talents known to you. At the same instant he touched a spring that was in the wall, and it opened, and seven black birds, which I recognized as hens, were brought in a cage by two black slaves.

These animals have a wonderful instinct for finding gold; you are about to judge for yourself. He placed several pieces of gold under cushions, in crevices in the wall, under the folds of his turban, then he said to the slaves: Tournabos, Fativos, Almabisos. They opened the cage, uncovered the heads of these birds, and the hens came out and flew at once to the various places where the gold was hidden; they took [...]

We are going to go out for a moment into the plain; I have placed several gold pieces in the sand; we will release our birds and soon they will have discovered the treasure. He made a sign to the slaves, who shut them up in the cage, and we set off.

As soon as we had come out of the pyramid, and about five hundred paces into the plain, he had the birds released, and they took a few steps; soon it seemed that instinct showed them where the treasure lay; they flew in that direction, and having begun to scratch, all seven of them, they soon discovered the bags; one of them began to cluck, we drew near and saw the bags that the old man had hidden. I could not help showing my surprise. My son, you see that everything is possible with the help of God and His mighty protection; we took the bags and went back into the pyramid.

He had the birds shut up again with the same precautions taken to bring them out; and he said to me: Let us see in what state my

A few more days, he said, and it will be able to receive its first lessons. He put the box back in its place. Since we have been together, the old man said to me, we have not yet gone out; we are going to take a little excursion into the countryside and adopt the costume of the country. The genie covered his head with a turban and dressed completely as a Turk; I did the same, and we prepared to set out.

Before going out, I saw the old man take a talisman and a ring; I noticed it. He said to me: That may be necessary for us; precaution is the mother of safety. We set off; we had been walking quietly for some time; the old man spoke to us of the changes that take place from time to time upon the globe, of the revolution of the stars, of the planets; he seemed to announce and foresee those that would yet occur. Suddenly, a horde of Arabs comes swooping down upon us with sabres raised; the old man looks at them without fear; he raises his hand, the brigands stop; he pronounced the words prescribed by

Retournons vers notre demeure.

It is impossible to describe the astonishment of these wretches; their chief appeared dismayed; the old man smiled, he pronounced in a loud voice: Natarter; and they fled with the swiftness of lightning.

Be at ease, said the old man, for a long time they will not dare reappear in this region.

We walked on for some time longer; time passed with extraordinary rapidity; the old man’s conversation was so varied, so instructive that it was impossible to listen to him without being charmed by all he said.

Let us return to our dwelling. And after pronouncing these words, he looked at the sun and cried out: Brilliant star, image of the divinity, thou who quickenest the earth and givest life to nature, receive my homage; may I, before leaving the earth, constantly enjoy thy light!

Who can give rise to these gloomy ideas, I cried out at once, why do you think of leaving the earth?
