Nachdem ich von Ihnen **) den Auszug des so wichtigen Werkes erhalten habe, besorgte ich alles, um mich und die Meinigen aus meiner ökonomischen Lage zu retten; versuchte ob Gott aus Gnaden helfen wolle.
Vielleicht ist es Ihnen bekannt, daß der König von Baiern schon jahrelang das französische Lotto spielt und selbiges an die Juden verpachtet hat. In diesem Spiel gewinnt selten Jemand, wohl aber ruiniren sich Tausende auf die traurigste Weise. Ich versuchte aber, ob durch dieß Werk die fünf Nummern angezeigt würden; ich machte alle Vorbereitungen zur Operation. Es erschien mir eine graue weiße Menschengestalt; zu sehen war nichts als die Hände und Füße; die übrige Gestalt war mir gleichsam mit einem Schleier bedeckt. In der Hand

After I had received from you **) the extract of the so important work, I arranged everything to save myself and my own from my economic situation; tried whether God would help out of grace.
Perhaps it is known to you that the King of Baiern has for years been playing the French Lotto and has leased the same to the Jews. In this game seldom does anyone win, but thousands ruin themselves in the saddest way. I tried, however, whether through this work the five numbers would be indicated; I made all preparations for the operation. There appeared to me a grey white human figure; nothing was to be seen but the hands and feet; the rest of the figure was covered for me as it were with a veil. In the hand

hielt er eine Tafel, worauf die fünf Nummern ganz deutlich waren, bald aber verschwand alles.
Wir lobeten und dankten Gott und am 11. Dezember trat ich meine Reise an, die 5 Nummern zu setzen. Die Ziehung war aber zwei Tage früher als ich geglaubt hatte, und wie erstaunte ich, als ich vernahm, daß alle herausgekommen, wo ich mein Lebensglück hätte machen können.
Ich wußte nichts zu thun, als das Nämliche auf die Münchner Ziehung zu thun, die am 6. dieses Statt fand; es geschahe in einem Gasthofe und es zeigte sich die nämliche Gestalt, nur war diesmal die Tafel gelb anstatt die erste weiß und ging so schnell vorüber, daß nur 11 und 33 erkannt werden konnten. Ich dankte Gott und setzte die 2 Nummern; wie erstaunte ich aber, als die Ziehungsliste die Nummern verkehrt brachte, 13 und 31! Also sahe ich, daß die Zwischenzahlen mir verdeckt und falsch angezeigt wurden, weil ich die Sache nicht genau behandelt hatte.
All' mein Geld hatte ich verloren und 111 Stunden vom Hause entfernt, war ich genöthiget das Traurige meiner Lage, mich und mein Alles einem bekannten und Gott ergebenen Kaufmann zu entdecken. Dieser nahm den herzlichsten Antheil und führte mich zu einem bekannten Geistlichen und sprach diesen um Hülfe an; allein dieser verweigerte es, indem er sagte, das seie zu heilig, daß er nur Gott leben wolle, und weil er selbst nicht in Noth seye, so wage er nicht es zu thun.

We praised and thanked God, and on December 11 I set out on my journey to stake the 5 numbers. But the draw was two days earlier than I had believed, and how astonished I was when I learned that all had come out, whereby I could have made my fortune.
I knew nothing to do but do the same for the Munich draw, which took place on the 6th of this [month]; it happened in an inn, and the same figure appeared, only this time the tablet was yellow instead of white as the first one had been, and it passed so quickly that only 11 and 33 could be recognized. I thanked God and staked the 2 numbers; but how astonished I was when the draw list brought the numbers reversed, 13 and 31! Thus I saw that the intermediate numbers were shown to me in a hidden and false way, because I had not handled the matter precisely.
I had lost all my money, and being 111 hours away from home, I was compelled to disclose the sadness of my situation, myself and all I had, to a known merchant devoted to God. He took the most heartfelt interest and led me to a known clergyman and asked him for help; but this one refused it, saying that it was too holy, that he wanted to live only for God, and because he himself was not in need, he did not dare to do it.

ausgezeichneter gottesfürchtiger Apotheker in Anspruch genommen; der sagte, wenn er nicht so alt wäre, als daß er seinen übrigen Rest der Tage Gott leben wolle, so würde er es thun; er habe das Nähmliche, es seye das Allerheiligste im Himmel und auf Erden und die Sache seye ganz leicht zu machen; die Behandlungsart seye Hauptsache, und der Mensch, der es thue, solle sich wohl prüfen, denn der Teufel mache sein Spiel auch dabei; endlich konnte mit vielem Bitten und Anhalten und Vorstellung meiner Lage solches herausbringen, damit ich doch nicht unverrichteter Sache nach Hause kehren werde, mußte aber versprechen, die Behandlungsart nirgends zu verzeichnen und seines Namens nicht zu gedenken.
Die Behandlung ist wie folgt:
Die Operation muß zwischen 11 und 12 Uhr geschehen, Nachts, in einem reinen hinteren Zimmer, so gegen Morgen liegt; einige Tage sich dem Geiste widmen, zwei brennende, geweihete Kerzen auf dem Tisch gestellt, Schlüssel und Siegel gezeichnet auf Pergament in der rechten Hand, feierlich bekleidet und mit Bekenntniß der Sünden die Operation anfangen, was bald geschehen seyn wird; nachher mache die Abdankung und lobe den Herren.

A distinguished, God-fearing apothecary was consulted; he said that if he were not so old that he wanted to live the remaining rest of his days for God, he would do it; he had the same thing—it was the Most Holy in heaven and on earth—and the matter was quite easy to do; the manner of treatment was the main thing, and the man who does it should examine himself well, for the devil also plays his game in it; finally, with much pleading and urging and presenting my situation, I was able to get it out of him, so that I would not return home without having accomplished anything, but I had to promise not to record the treatment anywhere and not to mention his name.
The treatment is as follows:
The operation must take place between 11 and 12 o'clock at night, in a clean back room facing east; for some days devote oneself to the Spirit, two burning, consecrated candles placed on the table, the key and seal drawn on parchment in the right hand, solemnly dressed and with confession of sins begin the operation, which will soon have happened; afterwards make the dismissal and praise the Lord.
