After this brief exposition of the mirror of Solomon, there is no need for the compiler of this modest little work to make you understand, friendly reader, that the inventor of this secret could have been led to do so only by charlatanical impulse, or by a desire to pass himself off as learned, which was frequent in those past times, and, with the sole aim of succeeding in it, drove the imagination of these sorts of writers to fish in the marvelous, exaggerated even, in order to make it supposed that they

What we have therefore previously set forth, regarding the mirror of Solomon, will apply no less to the secret of the black hen and other similar ones.

SECRET OF THE BLACK HEN

the famous secret of the Black hen, a secret without which one cannot count on the success of any cabala, which had been lost for a long time, has been found again; we transcribe it below:

«Take a black hen that has never laid an egg and that no cock has approached; take care, when taking it, not to make it cry out, and for that you shall go at eleven o’clock at night, when it is sleeping, and take it by the neck, which you shall squeeze only as much as is needed to keep it from crying out; betake yourself to a great chee[...]»

Then turn your face toward the east, kneel down and say an oration; that done, you shall perform the great invocation; then the unclean spirit will appear to you dressed in a scarlet coat trimmed with braid, a yellow jacket and sea-green breeches. Its head, which will resemble that of a dog with a donkey's ears, will be surmounted by two horns; its legs and its feet will be like those of a cow. It will ask you for your orders; you shall give them to it as you see fit, for it will no longer be able to refuse to obey you, and you may make yourself the richest, and consequently the happiest, of all men.

It is good that you should know that before beginning all that is said above, you must have performed your devotions and have nothing left to reproach yourself with. This is all the more essential since, were it not so, you would be more at the orders of the evil spirit than it would be at yours.

SANCTUM REGUM

The true Sanctum Regum of the great Clavicle, otherwise called the Pacta conventa Dœmoniorum, proceeds, as much as the preceding secrets, from a whimsical writer; therefore, even while reproducing the text in its entirety, we should nonetheless beg the reader to refer to the observation we have set down at folio 3y[?] of the present work.

And although there are still millions of spirits who are all subordinate to those named above, it is useless to name them, because they are only made use of when it pleases the upper spirits to make them work in their place; for they make use of all these inferior spirits as if they were their workmen or their slaves; thus, in making the pact with one of the six principal ones whom you need, it does not matter which spirit serves you; nevertheless, always ask the spirit with whom you make your pact, that it be one of the three principal ones subordinate to him who serves you.

Here precisely are the powers, sciences, arts and talents of the above-named spirits, so that he who wishes to make a pact may find in each of the talents of the six upper spirits what he will need.

NN.

Je ne puis t’accorder ta demande.

Demand in order to make a pact with thee, and so that thou mayest enrich me as soon as possible, otherwise I shall torment thee by the powerful words of the Clavicle. I thee

NN.

Answer of the Spirit.

I cannot grant thee thy demand except on condition that thou givest thyself to me within twenty years, to do with thy body and thy soul what pleaseth me.

LUCIFUGE ROFOCALE.

Then you shall cast to him your pact, which must be written in your own hand, upon a piece of virgin parchment, which consists of these few words following, placing therein your signature with your true blood.

Here is the pact:

“I promise to the great Lucifugé to reward him within twenty years for all the treasures he shall give me. In witness whereof, I have signed myself.”

NN.

I cannot grant thee thy demand.

Pourquoi me tourmentes-tu davantage ?

Then, to force the spirit to obey you, you will re-read the great appellation with the terrible words of the Clavicle, until the spirit reappears and tells you what follows:

Second apparition of the Spirit.

Why do you torment me further? If you leave me in peace, I will give you the nearest treasure, on condition that you consecrate a piece of it to me every first Monday of each month, and that you call me only one day each week; namely: from ten o'clock in the evening until two hours after midnight. Pick up your pact, I have signed it, and if you do not keep your word, you will be mine in twenty years.

LUCIFUGE ROFOCALE.

Reply to the Spirit.

I agree to your demand on condition that you will make the nearest treasure appear to me, which I will be able to carry away at once.

NN.

Reply of the Spirit.

Follow me, and take the treasure I am about to show you.

Then you will follow the spirit along the road [...]

Dismissal of the Spirit with whom one has made a pact.

O great Lucifugé! I am content with thee for the present, I leave thee in repose, and permit thee to withdraw wherever it may please thee, without making any noise nor leaving any bad odour.

NOTA BENE.

After this account concerning pacts, you will easily conclude, judicious reader, that we were right to warn you of the account you ought to make of these most bizarre writings, and you will acknowledge that their authors truly meant to mock the over-naive seekers of treasures, who, quite wrongly, might give them some credence.

SECRETS
TOUCHANT LES PANTACLES
ET
TALISMANS

SECRETS
CONCERNING PANTACLES
AND
TALISMANS

Talismans have been spoken of at sufficient length in the collection entitled: The Marvellous Secrets of THE NATURAL MAGIC OF PETIT Albert, so that we need only speak of them succinctly in the present work, for the reader would find (and in that he would make a judicious appraisal) that we must leave to César what is César's, that is, not to dig too deeply into the true book of Pantacles, which is none other than the one entitled; The Clavicles of Solomon, which we have already cited.

Let us say, then, to the indulgent reader, that: Pantacles are magical circles containing, in various languages, Hebrew, Syriac and others, the divine names; in order for them to be perfect, they must contain, inside the circle, one or more triangles in which are inscribed

Then take an earthen pot, in which you shall put new lit charcoal, male frankincense, mastic and
