Here begins the Book of Spirits, which was revealed to wise Solomon so as to constrain them upon the earth and make them obey the human will. For before this science was found, shown, made manifest and revealed to the said Solomon, the spirits wrought too much evil and pestilence upon the earth, and destroyed many goods of this world. And upon humankind they inflicted many persecutions. And therefore the mercy of God gave to the said Solomon the benefit of this holy science, to constrain the said spirits and make them obey the human creature, so that their lord should reign no more upon Christian[?] earth.

At the beginning of the book shall be set the names of the spirits who are governors and masters of all the other spirits of the region and office of Lucifer, of the office of Beelzebub, of Satan.

Of the four spirits who govern the four regions and parts of the world, namely: the spirit called Orient; Poymon; Egin[?] [and the fourth cardinal king].

TranslationEnglish

Lucifer was exceedingly fair and of as beautiful a stature as the other good angels, and he abode [in goodness] but for the space of a short hour. For he grew proud in beholding and contemplating his great beauty, in which he had been formed; and all those who were mighty in evil after him were cast into hell in confusion. And this was Lucifer the felon (so say the doctors of necromancy), and Lucifer presides in hell, and all the spirits of hell obey him without gainsaying him in anything.

Cay[?], a great and malicious spirit, is called Beelzebub, and was called before the time of Solomon "enthaon"[?]; and he is the greatest in hell after Lucifer. And it is to be known that he reigns beside the East, and whoever calls him must turn his face toward the East, and he will appear to him in fair figure and likeness. He teaches all sciences, and gives gold and silver to those who constrain him, and gives good answer to what is asked of him. And he reveals the secrets of hell if asked, and truly teaches the hidden[?] things in earth and sea, and [shows] all the treasures that are hidden in the earth, and has charge over the other spirits. And he must be called in fair weather.

The third spirit is called Satan, who was formed after Lucifer, and dwells in the air near the world. This Satan appears in great likeness, and dwells in the north. Whoever calls him must turn his face toward the north. He appears and has power to deform[?] all men and women if commanded, and will appear to do all evils according as he is commanded.

Of the four chief spirits the offices shall be told in this part, of which the first follows. — The first is called Orient, dwelling in the East (he takes his name from the quarter of the world). — The second, Poymon, dwells in the West. — The third, Amoymon, dwells in the southern parts. — The fourth, Egyn, dwells in the parts of the north. — Office of the first (continues on f. 180r).
